Choosing a Men’s Electric Shaver
There are so many mens electric shavers available today that determining which one is right for you can be challenging. You can increase the chances of getting a shaver that fits your needs by reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of shavers and by looking over the many features and options that are available.
Rotary shaver or foil shaver?
The two basic types of electric shavers are rotary shavers and foil shavers.
Remington rotary shaver
Rotary shavers have two or three independently pivoting circular blades mounted on the head of the shaver. This makes rotary shavers a little faster at shaving the areas of the face that curve in more than one direction, such as the chin. Rotary shavers are also slightly better at cutting long whiskers due to the design of the blades. This might be something to consider if your beard grows fast or if you occasionally let your beard grow out. Rotary shavers are usually easier to clean and slightly quieter than foil shavers.
Panasonic foil shaver
Foil shavers have a thin perforated metal surface covering one or more oscillating blades. Most men agree that they get a closer shave with a foil shaver than they get with a rotary shaver. Foil shavers are also better at precise detailing around mustaches and goatees and the larger cutting area allows for a faster shave. Reviews of the two types have found that foil shavers cause less skin irritation than rotary shavers. However, the thin foil surface does wear out and it is prone to damage if dropped.
The available features:
Most electric shavers are rechargeable, although you can still find some plug-in models available. A few Remington shavers allow you to plug it in while you shave if you ever forget to charge it. Several manufacturers make models that have a “quick-charge” feature which will produce enough charge for one shave in a few minutes. A charge indicator can also be a nice feature to get. An often overlooked but very important feature is automatic shut-off when the charge is complete, since overcharging will shorten the life of the shaver battery. For those who travel overseas, a model with dual-voltage capability is an added bonus.

Lets be honest, the best one is the one that doesnt need charging! Wet shave all day everyday (not literally).
All of the items you’ve pointed out here are definitely important to keep in mind when shopping for an electric razor. But I’ve always felt like nothing comes close to replacing a standard blade. Electric razors always seem to leave a little behind (maybe I’m using the wrong ones) and I believe that everything should be smooth to the touch.

I have the same issue as Greg, in that I have tried a couple of electric shavers in the past and they did not seem to get as close a shave as the regular blade razors, and maybe I have just used the wrong ones, or not bought a high end one. Realistically I would like to switch to an electric razor because I am sick and tired of paying the exorbitant prices of new razor blades, I don’t know how they can justify the prices! I might try the wet/dry shaver you mention in this post.

I’ve used a standard wet razor for most of my life until i bought a Remington foil shaver about 12 months ago. It took a while to get used to using electric but its now the shaver i use daily. I’m quite thick set and find that the more i use the electric shaver the softer my stubble is and its easier to get a close shave. However, i still shave with a standard razor when i have an occasion like a wedding to go to, makes me feel like i’ve made more effort to be properly shaved somehow..

I’m a big fan of the Panasonic rotary shavers because they work well and you just rinse them out. One thing to add – be careful when shopping to make sure the shaver is a combo wet/dry shaver. Some are just dry, and don’t play well with water!

Consider what you or the person you are buying for has been using in the past. If there is a particular brand of electric shaver that is familiar and gives good results then this is often a good indicator of where to start looking. For example if a person is happy with the shave they get from a rotary based Philishave then changing to a foil based shaver like a Braun or Panasonic isn’t always the best option. Obviously this works both ways foil to rotary and vice versa.
This is not to say that it is never worth changing shaver style, modern shavers offer excellent results with most people given the time to adjust and bed the shaver in. If you feel you may benefit from switching or maybe have tried different styles in the past then go for it!

I tried both rotary and foil shaver. Foil did’t work for me, maybe cause of the price (was really cheap). Then I decided to buy rotary one from Philips. It was some Senso Touch, it worked pretty fine, but I had to apply for guarantee 3 times over 1 year… So now I switched back to wet shaving, shave once a week and everything is fine
