Choosing a Men’s Electric Shaver
There are so many mens electric shavers available today that determining which one is right for you can be challenging. You can increase the chances of getting a shaver that fits your needs by reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of shavers and by looking over the many features and options that are available.
Rotary shaver or foil shaver?
The two basic types of electric shavers are rotary shavers and foil shavers.
Rotary shavers have two or three independently pivoting circular blades mounted on the head of the shaver. This makes rotary shavers a little faster at shaving the areas of the face that curve in more than one direction, such as the chin. Rotary shavers are also slightly better at cutting long whiskers due to the design of the blades. This might be something to consider if your beard grows fast or if you occasionally let your beard grow out. Rotary shavers are usually easier to clean and slightly quieter than foil shavers.
Foil shavers have a thin perforated metal surface covering one or more oscillating blades. Most men agree that they get a closer shave with a foil shaver than they get with a rotary shaver. Foil shavers are also better at precise detailing around mustaches and goatees and the larger cutting area allows for a faster shave. Reviews of the two types have found that foil shavers cause less skin irritation than rotary shavers. However, the thin foil surface does wear out and it is prone to damage if dropped.
The available features:
Most electric shavers are rechargeable, although you can still find some plug-in models available. A few Remington shavers allow you to plug it in while you shave if you ever forget to charge it. Several manufacturers make models that have a “quick-charge” feature which will produce enough charge for one shave in a few minutes. A charge indicator can also be a nice feature to get. An often overlooked but very important feature is automatic shut-off when the charge is complete, since overcharging will shorten the life of the shaver battery. For those who travel overseas, a model with dual-voltage capability is an added bonus.
The versatility of a wet/dry shaver is great. You can use them in the shower and with shaving cream, and they can
also be rinsed clean under running water. The more expensive wet/dry shavers also have automatic cleaning, and some will even clean, dry and charge all at the same time.
Some of the other features are; pop-up or slide-out trimmer (great for trimming
mustaches, beards and sideburns), a pivoting or swiveling shaver head (this really helps keep the blades in contact with your skin), foil shavers with a vibrating foil (can help you get a closer and faster shave).
By carefully evaluating which features are important to you, you will be more likely to get a shaver that you will be happy with.

I meant sensitive…
Well my father def. loved the razor. Thanks a lot. you guys helped me figure out a gift just in time for father’s day!
Shavers are such popular gift items, it’s hard to know which specific model makes the best one. Your article was very helpful. Thanks!

Lets be honest, the best one is the one that doesnt need charging! Wet shave all day everyday (not literally).
Agreed! That and shower gel, LOL! Although I have been given cheap electric razors as gifts before and usually, they don’t even cut through the hair :/
All of the items you’ve pointed out here are definitely important to keep in mind when shopping for an electric razor. But I’ve always felt like nothing comes close to replacing a standard blade. Electric razors always seem to leave a little behind (maybe I’m using the wrong ones) and I believe that everything should be smooth to the touch.

I have the same issue as Greg, in that I have tried a couple of electric shavers in the past and they did not seem to get as close a shave as the regular blade razors, and maybe I have just used the wrong ones, or not bought a high end one. Realistically I would like to switch to an electric razor because I am sick and tired of paying the exorbitant prices of new razor blades, I don’t know how they can justify the prices! I might try the wet/dry shaver you mention in this post.

I’ve used a standard wet razor for most of my life until i bought a Remington foil shaver about 12 months ago. It took a while to get used to using electric but its now the shaver i use daily. I’m quite thick set and find that the more i use the electric shaver the softer my stubble is and its easier to get a close shave. However, i still shave with a standard razor when i have an occasion like a wedding to go to, makes me feel like i’ve made more effort to be properly shaved somehow..

I honestly don’t know a lot of things about shavers so this post has been very helpful for me. I’m thinking of giving my bf an electric shaver for his birthday.
I’m a big fan of the Panasonic rotary shavers because they work well and you just rinse them out. One thing to add – be careful when shopping to make sure the shaver is a combo wet/dry shaver. Some are just dry, and don’t play well with water!

Consider what you or the person you are buying for has been using in the past. If there is a particular brand of electric shaver that is familiar and gives good results then this is often a good indicator of where to start looking. For example if a person is happy with the shave they get from a rotary based Philishave then changing to a foil based shaver like a Braun or Panasonic isn’t always the best option. Obviously this works both ways foil to rotary and vice versa.
This is not to say that it is never worth changing shaver style, modern shavers offer excellent results with most people given the time to adjust and bed the shaver in. If you feel you may benefit from switching or maybe have tried different styles in the past then go for it!
Great items for different kinds of shaves… i would love to share this with my dad.. i bet he’ll like this stuff! thanks so much for sharing this one..

Thanks for the in-depth explanation about electric shavers. I want to buy one for my husband, but it’s quite intimidating looking at all of the options and not knowing how to pick one out. I’ve got some good ideas now and know what to look for. I can’t wait to get rid of those expensive disposable razors that he uses. Thanks for the help!

Is this out of the market already?I want to give this as a gift to my son.
I’ve found the Panasonic ES8243a to be an amazing razor. Nothing for the price gets as close.
I most of the time use Rotary shaver. First i like fool, shaver but i did not know its actual purpose purpose. Through your blog i know it now. Actually i like Foil shaver because its shaving is very deep than rotary and smooth. Is not it admin? @ New Hampshire Weddings</a
Hey, first of all I would like to congrats you on having such an informative blog. I have very rarely seen discussions on such topics. Anyways, I would like to say that there are many varieties of Chinese machines for men shaving that are available in the market now a days.
Regards,
Andrew
I tried both rotary and foil shaver. Foil did’t work for me, maybe cause of the price (was really cheap). Then I decided to buy rotary one from Philips. It was some Senso Touch, it worked pretty fine, but I had to apply for guarantee 3 times over 1 year… So now I switched back to wet shaving, shave once a week and everything is fine
I much prefer foil shavers for the closeness. Why shave more than i have to? Saves time and i find i get tiny knicks with a rotary shaver- no thanks!
Great post
I like cordless shavers that I can use almost everywhere any time. But their batteries are often crappy((
I bought a remington several years ago, and it has lasted much longer than I thought it would. I keep thinking I should get another one when i see them on sale but I just can not justify it.
thx alot for good posts on your blog
i’ve personally never liked electric razors, no matter what the type. i always feel they cut and tear at the skin and hair. i prefer a plain old fashioned blade.
so which gets the max vote – Rotary shaver or foil shaver??
I use foil shaver.. good going ..no issues…
I have the discussion on rotary vs foil before and there’s no clear winner. Any time one shaver gets a few votes, there’s always someone who says they like the other type more. It’s all about personal preference. After reviewing many shavers I personally feel the more high end shavers are the best electric shavers for sensitive skin. An example would be the Braun Series 7. I would imagine anyone who had a bad experience with electric shavers probably used a cheap product.
I can’t use electric shavers. I prefer a sharp blade because it makes me feel all manly and stuff, as if I might whip out a pocket knife at any time.
I have no idea which electric shaver to get? I thought the three headed thing was good? But then I have read reviews about the foil style being good also. Can any of the men out there give me a clue about what electric shaver to buy?
Just make sure that shaver is not damage your skin or being iritated. Keep clean your beard with shaver safely
Thank you very much. Much knew from the article. Add to favorites!
I have a severe allergy to various ingredients in rubber, which is found on virtually all women’s razor heads. It causes my legs to itch incessantly for a couple weeks after shaving. I have tried waxing, but my hair seems too fine for it to be effective.
Good topic, it’s all right
